Succeeding is hard. If it wasn't, everyone would have everything that we have ever wanted. Success is also a moving target, as we become more successful, our definition of success also changes. It usually expands. However, you define success there are 3 factors to success that all entrepreneurs must keep in front of us while we reach for our definition of success. There is no shortage of things demanding our attention but how many of those are factors that will impact our success. I think there are 3 key factors that we have to keep our eye on as entrepreneur. When we do, we will likely be accomplishing many of the smaller things as well but by only keeping our eye on a few, such as 3 we don't become overwhelmed and we can stay the course. The 3 factors that I'm talking about are: Focus, Perseverance and Knowledge.
We must stay focused on what is important to our business. There are lots of distractions every day; people calling you, looking for a slice of your time to make a sales pitch. Or, it will be the latest survey looking for your feedback on why you either use their product or you don't use it. Add to this the normal business distractions and you have a full day. I bet you say it all the time, "I was busy all day but got nothing done". This is why we must bring focus to our day to ensure we accomplish what is important to our business. Having a strategy map can help us succeed and do it on purpose rather than it being an accident. The strategy map ensures that we focus on what is important to the business. If it isn't on the strategy map then it likely isn't key to our business and we shouldn't be focusing on it. If the item must be done, then we need to employ others to do the work or outsource it.
In addition to staying focused, we must also persevere through the many trials of owning a business. It means that we stay disciplined and committed to the things we must do. It is so easy to experience some failures or setbacks and want to throw in the towel. But we must resist the temptation and persevere towards our goals. The important thing is to fail forward when we fail. You will have noticed that I said "when we fail" because we all do and we will again. Failing is ok as long as we are failing forward. This means that we learn from the failures or mistakes that we have made and we adjust so we don't make the same mistake again. In fact, we should embrace the mistakes and failures the we experience. We learn quickly from mistakes much faster than if we read the same material in a book. If we learn from a failure and don't repeat it then it was a success. Of course, the trick is to make sure that the failure isn't so large that it causes us the business. Next we need to learn from failures and we need to remember it is ok to fail. Persevere; you will get to where you need to be eventually.
The third key to success that I want to cover in this article is knowledge. We must not loose sight of the fact that we each have unique knowledge that others want. Our education, previous jobs, experiences and interests create a unique set of knowledge that others want. This is why they hire us. If we didn't have unique knowledge, there would be no reason for our customers to purchase our products or hire us as consultants or coaches. What typically happens though is we forget that we have unique knowledge and we try to be like everyone else. We market ourselves on the same points as our competitors when we should be highlighting what makes us different. If we lose sight of this fact, our products and services don't have the competitive edge. If we incorporate the unique knowledge that is ours, we have a unique product that meets unique needs. If we find the prospects that are looking for these unique qualities, the sell will be easy.
In conclusion, there are many things that are important to the success of our businesses but focus, perseverance and knowledge are key things we must master to be successful. Stay focused, Stay the course and remember that you have unique knowledge that no one else has and you can reach your definition of success.
