Robert Stickle After a 10 year career managing the financial and IT operations of an insurance company, I had started a job with a financial planning company. After about 6 months of working there, the markets took a hit and I started to see the company losing money. Because no one was investing, the company started to struggle and eat into its reserves. I decided then than that I wanted control over when I would be leaving rather than being laid off. So, that’s when I started to do some soul searching and decided I would try my hand at consulting. I had been interested in it before, and friends had always encouraged me, but now I knew it was time. The big thing for me was taking control over my destiny rather than having one thrust upon me. I’m a firm believer in making things happen rather than waiting for them. Before I left, I worked evenings and weekends to put together a plan and I began contacting some of my contacts in the financial and insurance industries. Within a couple of weeks I had my first client and quit my job. I’ve never looked back since!

Gary Gzik For me, it was all about “Kissing the Boss Goodbye”. Not to be rude, but I was working for a coaching/consulting firm that was great, but was not willing to change to create new opportunities. They were not open to listening to new ideas. We were an oversized company and the bosses never believed in going out of their way to do things the right way. I tried on many occasions to make suggestions that the customers were dying for – but nobody would listen to me. Not only that, my boss was making huge money off of my work that was only paid a minimal salary. That’s when I decided to kiss him goodbye. I had clients that were asking me to work for them on my own, but since it was against company policy, I decided to quit. I didn’t pick up the clients until a year later (when my terms were up) but I managed to move away and pick up many more. I knew that being able to control what was right and meet the customers’ needs through my capabilities was essential. I was there to help the customers not put money into an account for a boss who only cared about how nice his Jaguar looked in the parking lot. Take it from me; you gain much more credibility and money when you can do what is right for the clients and by taking your knowledge and turning it into a coaching /consulting business is the best way to do it!
